Oban 10 Year Old 2022 Special Release Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Oban Distillery is found beneath a steep cliff on the West Coast of Scotland in a port town of the same name. In fact, the town was built around the distillery, highlighting the importance of Scotch production to the economy of the day (and probably these days as well!). The distillery itself was built in 1793, making it one of the oldest in Scotland. The malt produced here is the embodiment of the salty coastal surrounds of Oban Distillery itself.

The 2022 Special Release of Oban 10 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is something else. Aged in refill and new American Oak casks before it was finished in Amontillado-seasoned casks, this is an extraordinary dram. Creamy and smooth, we were taken aback by its impressive balance of spiciness and saltiness with fruit notes of sweet violet and spiced plum in the back. Don’t overcomplicate things and savor this one neat in a Whisky glass or add a few drops of water to soften it a bit.
