Description
The original blended Irish dram that deserves its status as ons of the top-selling Irish Whiskies in the world.
The Tullamore Distillery was founded by Michael Molloy on the outskirts of Tullamore, County Offaly, Ireland, in 1829. It was passed on to his son who hired Daniel E. Williams to be general manager. That was a good decision. Williams built the company up into a great success. The company and brand have changed hands a few times over the years, and the distillery was — for a time — moved away from the town it is named after. But William Grant & Sons purchased the company in 2010 and built a brand new distillery in Tullamore with a visitor center in one of the original bonded warehouses.
Tullamore D.E.W. Original Irish Whiskey has been called the “Original Blended Irish Whiskey” and we’ve found no one who denies the claim. It is a lesson in triples — three different grain Spirits, triple distilled, and aged in three different cask types for smoothness and balance. It’s those casks that seen to get everyone’s attention. First comes traditional refill casks, then ex-Bourbon barrels, then ex-Sherry butts. It is the flavor profile that created a sensation and made Tullamore the second biggest-selling Irish Whiskey in the world.
Smartass Corner:
The DEW or D.E.W. is the company name comes from the initials of the general manager of the distillery who would eventually go on to purchase it — Daniel E. Williams.
