Description
GlenDronach’s signature Single Malt masterfully finished in Douro Port pipes and perfectly balanced by Rachel Barrie.
GlenDronach Distillery was founded in 1826 by James Allardice whose name is still proudly displayed on the bottle. They are smack dab in the middle of the Highland action about a mile south of the River Deveron. Over their 200-year history, this traditional distillery has been bought, sold, and traded more times than a Chicago politician. But in 2008 they were acquired from Pernod Ricard by the BenRiach Distillery Company.
GlenDronach has won a lot of awards across their wide range of superlative releases. But the best award — and the only one you probably care about — is that they have a devoted cadre of followers who make GlenDronach their personal, daily dram.
At GlenDronach, they age their Single Malt in a combination of Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso Sherry casks — it is a vital part of their signature flavor profile. The Glendronach Port Wood Finish starts just that same way, so the Spirit has a lovely and strong Sherry influence. But this dram is then finished in Douro Valley Port Wine pipes. The combination is a bit of a gamble. Sherry and Port finishing are rarely combined in Whiskies because it takes a confident, experienced hand and superlative taste buds to strike the right balance.
But GlenDronach’s master Blender Rachel Barrie scores a win. This dram is really well-balanced and exciting in the mouth at a perfect 46% ABV with no chill-filtration or other funny stuff.
