Description
The classic Nikka Miyagikyo Single Malt profile finished in Apple Brand casks for a romantically-inspired dram.
Masataka Taketsuru was the son of a Sake producer. As a young man he was sent to Scotland to learn the secrets of Whisky. He did… but he also learned about love. He met Rita Cowen — a Scottish lass whom he married and took back to Japan with him. In 1934, he founded Yoichi Distillery in southern Hokkaido on a spot surrounded on three sides by mountains — a terrain and climate very similar to the Scottish Highlands. Growing to become the second largest producer of Whiskies in Japan, they opened a second distillery — Mihagikyo — in 1969.
Nikka actually launched two Apple Brandy finished Whiskies — one from each of their distilleries — to commemorate the one hundredth wedding anniversary of Masataka Taketsuru and Rita Cowen. Nikka Miyagikyo Apple Brandy Wood Finish 2020 Edition is the signature Miyagikyo Single Malt aged in ex-Sherry casks. Then it’s finished in barrels that were used to mature their in-house Apple Brandy. During the early days of operation, it was the Apple juice, jams, and Brandies that kept the business afloat, making these drams a very tasty romantic gesture indeed. And since this is a limited edition, only 6.250 bottles were produced at 47% ABV.
