Description
Mortlach’s elder statesman Single Malt tamed by twenty years in ex-Sherry casks.
Dufftown is the Highland hamlet that calls itself the Whisky Capital of the World. This little town of less than 1700 people is home to six prominent distilleries — including Mortlach. Founded in 1823 by James Findlater, Mortlach became the first “legal” distillery in Dufftown. The history of Mortlach is an honorable one of tradition, innovation, and engineering—including the famous “2.81” distillation method using multiple still types. Their finely crafted spirits are a core component of the most premium Johnnie Walker blends—so much so that Johnnie Walker bought the distillery in 1923.
Mortlach 20 Year Old“Cowie’s Blue Seal” is a Single Malt named after George Cowie — an engineer who took the distillery from obscurity. He used to sign the bottles in blue ink to demonstrate authenticity. George’s reproduced signature appears on the bottle now.
Mortlach says that this spirit has been “tamed” for twenty years in Sherry casks — which is a fitting way to refer to aging Spirit from The Beast of Dufftown. But all that time in the Sherry casks does some mighty fine work indeed, yielding a smooth and velvety dram with a tiger’s heart. And it’s bottled at 43.4% ABV, so this dram holds up nicely neat and with a splash.
Smartass corner:
Because Mortlach Whiskies have a signature robust and “meaty” flavor profile, they distillery has earned the nickname “The Beast of Dufftown.”
