On the roof of the World, the laws of nature are different. The Tibetan barley is unique, the Himalayan waters are the freshest in the world, and the 400-year-old tradition of distilling malted barley has peaked in finding a way to produce a crystal clear liquid out of the pot still. By using a porcelain amphora called Jiu Hai to keep the distillate for a number of years, the alcohol matures very slowly, giving the Whiskies a soft round taste with a creamy body. And there, at an elevation of 2.500 meters above sea level, shadowed by the Ta’er Monastery and 8,850m high Qomolangma mountain, lies Huzhujinquan Distillery, where the Master Blenders are using all of the natural goodies and ancient knowledge to conjure some of the richest Single Malts this world has ever seen.
Jiu Hai Bu Gan Meido is an exceptional Single Malt, made out of a selection of winter barley, harvested on the Tibetan plateau at the end of the blossoming season of flower peony, known in Tibet as Meido. Malted, mashed, and fermented with the fresh Himalayan water under the action of indigenous yeasts, this Single Malt was double distilled and kept in Jiu Hai porcelain for 9 to 30 years before maturing in ex-Bourbon casks and French oak casks for 38 months. Bottled at an ABV of 42%, this rich expression is filled with poise and softness that arrives with the place of its making. Only 306 bottles of this expression are available in the American market.
