Description
The Highlands kind of epicness.
George Connell officially started Glengoyne in 1833, but good old George has been making Whisky long before that. Anyway, the point is that Glengoyne distillery has got quite a tradition when it comes to single malt Whisky. The distillery is located at Dumgoyne, north of Glasgow. It lies in the cross path of the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland, meaning Glengoyne’s Whisky is quite uniquely made in the Highlands, but aged in the Lowlands.
Famously, they say the Glengoyne distilling process takes longer than any other in Scotland to deliver their unique richness and character. To understand the signature Glengoyne style you also need to know these three things. First, the malt is indirectly dried with warm air (no peat or coils). Second, they exclusively use Golden Promise barley — which has a lower grain yield, but higher quality. Third, they make extensive use of Sherry casks for aging across the entire core range. Only the best casks will do.
There’s so plenty to love about this brand, and everything can be quite evident in the Glengoyne 21. This used to be the oldest expression in the lineup until the 25-year-old was released. Anyways, this is as premium a bottling as you’re gonna find. Balanced, rich and full of that special Glengoyne character. The sherry casks play a massive part in the finished product with sweet and spicy aroma reminding us of the fact that this distillery offers something special indeed. Something worth exploring and admiring. At this price, you’re getting a fine bargain, but even more importantly — a truly polished Whisky. Twenty-one is the age of responsibility, and we can safely say that this dram is fully matured.
