Kentucky songwriter Chris Stapleton’s breakthrough solo single is a bluesy ballad about the seductive force of love. After Stapleton and Justin Timberlake sang the song as a duet at the 2015 CMA Awards, it peaked at number one on Billboard’s Country Songs list.
Strangely enough, considering Stapleton’s fame as a songwriter, “Tennessee Whiskey” is a copy of a classic country song that became a massive hit for George Jones in 1983 after David Allan Coe sang it as a minor hit in 1981.
Many people have also pointed out how similar the revised arrangement is to Etta James’s 1968 R&B classic “I’d Rather Go Blind,” which Beyoncé recorded for the 2008 film Cadillac Records and GIN.
