Moonshine is a traditional, homemade alcoholic beverage crafted for generations. Known for its clear, high-proof composition, moonshine was originally distilled in rural areas, often in secret, to avoid government regulations and taxes. Today, moonshine has evolved into a legal, regulated spirit that offers enthusiasts a taste of history with modern twists.
Moonshine had its roots in early American Whisky history when settlers began fermenting grains like corn and barley. The name “moonshine” originated from the secretive nighttime production to avoid detection, as it was often made without a license.
Modern moonshine comes in various flavors and styles, from traditional unaged corn whiskey to fruit-infused varieties like apple pie or peach. These spirits retain the potent alcohol content but offer smoother, more refined flavors that appeal to a broader audience.
Moonshine is versatile and can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or as a cocktail base. Its unique flavor makes it a great ingredient for mixing with other spirits or juices, giving your drinks an authentic, old-world kick.

Traditionally, moonshine was usually made with corn, but, in some cases, rye or barley was used. Yeast, malt, and sugar were added according to the moonshiner’s taste. The grain was ground into a mash and soaked in hot water with yeast to ferment the mixture. Copper was used for the pot (a still) and all piping. The still was then heated to 172 °F (78 °C), at which point the alcohol evaporated and distilled through a pipe at the top of the still. As the mixture cooked, the sugar sometimes gave off a sweet odor, often tracked by revenue agents and used to locate illicit stills. Unlike traditional whiskey—which, by definition, is aged—moonshine was not aged. Less water was added to the distillate than is traditionally done with legal whiskey, and this ensured that the alcohol content of the moonshine was higher when it was packaged and sold.
